Eight DQ Grill & Chill restaurants could be added in Spartanburg County by 2017, according to company officials.
Jim Kerr, vice president of franchise development for Minneapolis-based International Dairy Queen Inc., said Dairy Queen’s expansion plans include a total of 20 stores in Greenville and Spartanburg counties.
“The Greenville-Spartanburg area has shown phenomenal growth and we’re super impressed,” he said. “We haven’t had the area as a focus, but we have a tremendous amount of interest and we’re forging ahead.”
Kerr said the company recently opened DQ Grill & Chill stores in Florence and Hilton Head. Those stores have been well received, he said.
Dairy Queen has begun recruiting franchisees to operate stores in the Upstate. The company has one franchised DQ Grill & Chill store in Spartanburg, located in the Dorman Centre.
Kerr said the company requires that franchisees have at least $400,000 in liquidity to open a store. The company will work with franchisees who want to open multiple stores, he said.
The average investment in each store ranges from about $1 million to $1.8 million, Kerr said. Each store creates between 50 and 100 jobs, he said.
Kerr said Dairy Queen offers a number of support services to franchisees, including state-of-the-art analytics, market planning and design.
The company plans to continue rolling out new menu items, including its artisan-style sandwiches and hot desserts, Kerr said.
Dairy Queen is a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. The company operates 6,700 stores in 49 states and 23 countries.
Kerr said the company opened 84 stores in 2015. He said he anticipates Dairy Queen will open a similar number in 2016. source:http://www.goupstate.com/article/20160227/articles/160229698
